Intrigued by the idea of two birds kissing on a cuckoo clock, I saw the opportunity to try it when I was reminded of an image of a clock (not a cuckoo) I had seen years ago, ending up with the Victorian Cuckoo Clock. I wasn’t thinking white to begin with. And was a bit surprised one morning to walk into my workshop and see a chapel on the test stand. Happily surprised that is!
The Design
Starting with a case sturdily constructed from Baltic birch plywood, I designed this clock on the fly. Some clocks require mapping out beforehand. This one grew into what it wanted to be as I worked on it.
The steep roof, the vertical clapboards, and the slatted windows on the sides were inspired by a non-cuckoo clock I saw years ago. It kept bugging me to use it as a springboard. One day I realized I had the perfect case already made as I had had two made for a custom clock. It was the perfect shape. That was all I needed to hit the GO button.
Originally I envisioned a verdigris copper dial on this clock. But when I laid one on the front to see how it looked both Mark my stepmom Jayne said what I was thinking, “Eh.” So I dove into my electronic file of clocks dials I keep for inspiration. That’s where I found one similar to the one ultimately on the clock. I hunkered down into Corel Draw for several hours to draw my own version, then cut it out. I feel that the clock and dial were made for one another!
Options
Would you like your clock to be a different color? I can paint your clock grey, or stain it… whatever you wish. Since I make my clocks when ordered simple customizations such as color are welcome.
As shown, the clock has no cuckoo door. Many who have seen it real life say keep it that way. So, I am offering the clock either way. When you order just let me know whether you want the cuckoo door as an option.
I can also make a plaque for your clock to commemorate a special event, such as a wedding. There are a couple of options for placement, so let’s discuss it if that is something you’d like.
The Clockworks
All of the clockworks are imported from the Black Forest” the Regula 8-day movement, the Keinzler bellows, the cuckoo, and even the lift wires for the bellows. From there, I design and build my clocks at my farm in Hickory Flat, Georgia.
Usually the movement for figures on a cuckoo clock are powered by the arms on the movement that lift the bellows. But I wanted the Blue Birds to be up high on the clock. So I attached them to the bellows tops which are much higher up. I had to make the birds light so as not to put a damper on the bellows. It worked!
