Often made for weddings or anniversaries, interlocking rings of the Double Wedding Ring quilt design symbolizes love.
Examples of quilts using this design date much earlier, but became popular in American in the late 1920’s. A challenging quilt to make, it is always on a new quilter’s “someday” list to make. I was one of them when I first started quilt making. And yes, I made one for one of the books I wrote way back when.
So now, with my clockmaker’s hat on, how about a cuckoo clock?
The Design
As for the Log Cabin Quilt Cuckoo Clock my goal was to make a wooden quilt to look like it was draped over a bed. Therefore I designed the sides of the clock to look like borders of the quilt with a row of square patches an quilting lines in between.
While the clock could have hung as a square on the wall I wanted it to be on-point, as that’s much more interesting especially if hung with another of my quilt cuckoo clocks. That decision presented a challenge as I couldn’t simply cut holes in the bottom for the chains and a pendulum. After a few trials I decided slots were the way to go and I’d have to find a way to secure the chains for shipping.
Options
Would you like your clock to be a quilt of a different color? Perhaps a blue or yellow background, or a family quilt you’d like to use as color inspiration? I can paint or stain a clock for you or even inlay wood veneer. Send me an email, text or call to discuss what you have in mind.
The Clockworks
The clockworks are imported from the Black Forest: the Regula 8-day movement, the Keinzler bellows, the cuckoo, and even the lift wires for the bellows. From there, I design and build my clocks at my farm in Hickory Flat, Georgia. They are made as they are in Germany. I know, I shot a TV show there and have been in the factory when I had my first models made there. Plus, I learned clockmaking by taking cuckoos apart.
